Plug-in Installation Guide
Plug-in lighting avoids connection to fixed wiring, but secure mounting, hidden services, cable routing and product compatibility still matter. Follow the exact manual supplied with your lamp.
This guide covers lamps designed by the manufacturer to plug into a socket, such as a plug-in wall lamp or swag pendant. It does not cover converting a hardwired light, opening a driver, modifying a plug or connecting to fixed electrical wiring. Product instructions always take priority over this general sequence.
01 / Scope
Confirm that the lamp is designed for plug-in use
Check the product page, selected variant and manual for the power method, rated voltage, plug type, cable length, mounting hardware, fixture weight and permitted orientation. Do not infer any of these details from the product image.
Stop if fixed wiring is involved
If the product requires connection inside a wall box or ceiling rose, use the supplied hardwired instructions and a qualified electrician or competent professional. Do not cut off a plug or splice a cable to change the installation type.
02 / Preparation
Choose a position that works with the socket
- Measure the real cable route to the socket, including curves around furniture.
- Keep the lead away from door hinges, cooktops, radiators, water and walking routes.
- Confirm the wall or ceiling material and select fixings rated for the lamp weight.
- Use an appropriate detector to check for hidden electrical cables and pipes before drilling.
- Verify the product is approved for the room; bathrooms and outdoor areas require a suitable IP rating and installation zone.
- Check the product rating for the local 230 V / 50 Hz supply and confirm the supplied plug or approved adapter.
Typical tools
Pencil, tape measure, spirit level, suitable detector, drill and bit for the substrate, screwdriver, manufacturer-approved screws and anchors, plus cable clips that fit the lead without crushing it.
03 / Mounting
Secure the fixture to the structure
Unpack and inspect
Keep the lamp unplugged. Check the cable, plug, shade, mounting plate and fixings for damage or missing parts.
Mark the mounting points
Hold the supplied bracket or template in position and level it. Mark only the holes shown in the product manual.
Check the drilling zone
Use a suitable detector and confirm the substrate. If the result is uncertain, move the position or ask a competent installer.
Install approved anchors
Use fixings suited to solid masonry, hollow block, plasterboard, timber or the actual surface. The decorative finish alone must not support the lamp.
Attach the lamp
Follow the supplied sequence and tighten evenly without overtightening fragile parts. Confirm the lamp cannot rotate or lift off its bracket unintentionally.
04 / Cable route
Keep the lead visible, relaxed and protected
Route the cable with gentle curves. Do not stretch it, trap it behind furniture, run it under rugs or pinch it in clips. Leave enough slack at adjustable joints and at the plug.
For a swag pendant
Use only ceiling hooks and anchors approved for the fixture weight and ceiling type. The cable must not rub on a sharp hook or carry loads in a way the manual does not permit.
For a wall lamp
Place clips at regular intervals and keep the lead away from the moving head. A paintable cover can conceal the cable only if it does not trap heat or damage the insulation.
05 / First use
Complete a cold inspection before plugging in
- The lamp is stable and all specified fasteners are fitted.
- No cable section is cut, crushed, sharply bent or under tension.
- The plug and product rating match the intended supply or approved adapter.
- The light source is the permitted type and wattage.
- The cable cannot be reached by small children or pulled by normal movement.
- The lamp is dry and clear of curtains, bedding and heat-sensitive surfaces.
After plugging in, operate the lamp while observing from a safe position. Unplug it and contact support if it flickers abnormally, smells hot, crackles, trips protection or shows any cable or plug damage.

Common installation questions
Does plug-in mean no professional help is ever needed?
No. It avoids connection to fixed wiring, but heavy fixtures, uncertain walls, high ceilings, difficult drilling zones and wet locations may still require a competent installer or electrician.
Can I use an extension lead?
Use only a correctly rated, undamaged extension where permitted by the product instructions and local guidance. It must not create a trip hazard or become a hidden permanent wiring substitute.
Can I install a plug-in wall lamp in a bathroom?
Only if the exact fixture, plug arrangement, IP rating and location are approved for that bathroom zone. Ask a qualified electrician when uncertain.
Can the cable be painted?
Do not paint the electrical cable unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it. Use an approved cable cover or select a cable finish that suits the room.
